Boutique Hotel To Replace Downtown Marshall Hotel in Sacramento

Boutique hotel SacramentoA dilapidated hotel in downtown Sacramento is checking out for good. The Marshall Hotel on 11th and L Street will be torn down, and in its place will be a boutique hotel.

A large development company has ‘big’ plans for downtown Sacramento’s Marshall Hotel.

“The area where this hotel is, it’s an area that has been a challenge so when you look at a development project that has the potential this one does, certainly that is good news for not only downtown but the visitors and people who live in this community,” says Presidio Co.

Developers for Presidio Co. plan to turn the Marshall into a 14-story boutique hotel.

“These old buildings have got to go, they need to be new, if they want to reopen K Street, things like that you have to get ride of Greyhound,” developers say.

It won’t be the first boutique hotel for Sacramento; the Citizen has been a main attraction since it opened.

“We have hotel developers and boutique operators saying we want to be here, where is the convention center, how can we be close to it?” explain developers.

Michael Ault is the Executive Director of the downtown Sacramento partnership. Ault says it is key to preserve downtown Sacramento’s rich history and new development doesn’t need to be at the expense of the historic buildings.

“I think Greyhound moving, the Marshall Hotel going through a significant renovation, streetscape improvements on the K Street Mall, Westfield going through a renovation and it’s a really good sign for that area,” explains Ault.

There are also plans in the works right now for two more boutique hotels downtown, but with the poor economy, all of these projects are stalled until the market gets better.
